Founded in 2017, Sarah Jayne Designs is a UK-based, family-run company dedicated to designing and creating beautiful, protective sleeves for books of all kinds — from treasured heirloom Bibles to journals and well-loved paperbacks. We create stylish, timeless, and practical pieces that safeguard the books you cherish.
Our journey began modestly, with a single sewing machine set up on a dining table and weekends spent attending local markets across the country. As our customer base grew, so did our workshop, our online presence, and our community. Today, we are proud to serve customers worldwide through our website and Etsy shop, reaching readers in 2,309 cities across 34 countries — many of whom return to us time and again.
Reading has always been central to our lives. Long before founding the business, we designed and refined book sleeves for our own use, experimenting with fabrics to protect paperbacks while camping and sailing. A defining moment came during a visit to the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, where we discovered the exceptional craftsmanship of Harris Tweed® and the heritage behind it. Inspired by its rich patterns, enduring quality, and remarkable ethos, we began incorporating Harris Tweed into our designs.
Harris Tweed is made from 100% British wool and is naturally renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable. It is breathable, wind-resistant, water-resistant, and flame-resistant — all without the need for additional chemical finishes. We were honoured to be approved as artisans, enabling us to work authentically with this iconic cloth and become part of its ongoing story.
Every Sarah Jayne Designs book sleeve is handmade from start to finish in our UK workshop. Our commitment to quality and meticulous attention to detail ensure that each piece is crafted with precision, durability, and care. We regularly update our collection as the mills release new tweed patterns; some designs are later discontinued, making certain pieces rare and especially unique. Alongside these limited editions, we maintain a selection of core colours and patterns that remain enduring favourites.
Sustainability and supporting local enterprise are fundamental to our values. We source all textiles, threads, packaging, sewing machines, printed materials, and hardware within the UK, prioritising other small businesses wherever possible. Our packaging is fully recyclable, reflecting our commitment to responsible production.
