The Story of Harris Tweed: From the Isle of Harris to Your Book/Bible Cover

A Fabric Like No Other
There are fabrics, and then there is Harris Tweed. Few textiles in the world carry the weight of history, place, and craftsmanship that this extraordinary cloth does — and fewer still are protected by an Act of Parliament to ensure their authenticity.
Harris Tweed is handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, made from 100% pure virgin wool that is dyed and spun in the islands. Every metre bears the iconic Orb trademark — a guarantee that what you're holding is the genuine article, unchanged in its essential character for over a century.
But what does this have to do with a Bible cover made in England? Everything, as it turns out.
An Island That Changed Everything
Sarah Jayne Designs was born in 2017, but its soul was shaped earlier — on a visit to the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. The landscape there is unlike anywhere else in Britain: vast skies, ancient rock, and a quietness that feels almost sacred. It's a place where time moves differently, where craft is still woven into daily life in the most literal sense.
It was there that our founder, Sarah Westlake, first encountered Harris Tweed up close — not as a fashion fabric or a heritage curiosity, but as something alive with meaning. The colours of the tweed seemed to echo the landscape itself: the heather purples, the sea greens, the warm ochres of the moorland. And the texture — robust yet refined — spoke of something built to last.
That visit planted a seed. If a fabric this beautiful and this durable could be used to protect something precious — a well-loved Bible, a treasured book — then something truly special could be created.
What Makes Harris Tweed So Special?
Harris Tweed's uniqueness isn't just marketing. It's enshrined in law. The Harris Tweed Act of 1993 defines exactly what Harris Tweed must be: handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, made from pure virgin wool that has been dyed and spun in the islands. No shortcuts. No compromises.
This means every piece of Harris Tweed you encounter has been touched by human hands at every stage of its creation. The wool is sorted, dyed in small batches using traditional methods, carded, spun, and then woven on a treadle loom in a weaver's home. It's a process that takes skill, patience, and a deep connection to the craft.
The result is a fabric with remarkable properties:
- Exceptional durability — Harris Tweed is naturally tough and resilient, designed to withstand decades of use
- Natural water resistance — the lanolin in the wool provides a degree of natural water repellency
- Breathability — unlike synthetic fabrics, wool regulates temperature naturally
- Timeless beauty — the colours and textures only improve with age, developing a beautiful patina
- Sustainability — 100% natural, biodegradable, and produced using traditional methods with minimal environmental impact
From the Hebrides to Your Hands
At Sarah Jayne Designs, we are proud to be an approved Harris Tweed artisan — one of a select group of makers authorised to use this protected fabric in our products. This isn't a status we take lightly. It means every Bible cover, book sleeve, and accessory we create using Harris Tweed carries with it the full heritage and integrity of the fabric.
We source our Harris Tweed directly, ensuring that the cloth we use meets the exacting standards of the Harris Tweed Authority. When you hold one of our covers, you're holding a piece of the Outer Hebrides — a fragment of that extraordinary landscape and the centuries of craft tradition it has nurtured.
Why Harris Tweed for a special book Cover?
A Bible, a journal, a book is often one of the most personal and well-used items a person owns. It travels to work, church, study groups, on holidays, and sits on bedside tables. It deserves protection that is as enduring as the words it contains.
Harris Tweed is perfect for this purpose. Its natural toughness means it won't fray or wear thin with regular use. Its texture provides a secure, non-slip grip. And its beauty — those rich, complex patterns and colours — makes it a joy to carry and display.
But perhaps most importantly, there's something fitting about wrapping a treasured book in a fabric that is itself a product of deep tradition, careful craft, and a profound connection to place. Harris Tweed has been made the same way for generations. It carries stories within its weave.
The Beginning of Something Handmade
Sarah Jayne Designs started on a dining table in 2017 with a simple idea: to create book covers that were beautiful, practical, and made with genuine care. That first cover was made from Harris Tweed, and Harris Tweed has remained at the heart of what we do ever since.
Today, our covers reach customers in over 2,300 cities across 34 countries — from the UK to the United States, Australia to South Africa. But every single one is still made by hand, with the same attention to detail and the same love of craft that went into that very first piece.
The Isle of Harris started this story. Every cover we make continues it.
