Choosing the Perfect Bible Cover: A Sizing and Pattern Guide

Finding the Right Fit

A Bible cover should fit like it was made for your Bible — because, at Sarah Jayne Designs, it is. Every cover we make is crafted to fit the specific dimensions of your Bible, ensuring a snug, secure fit that protects the book without being too tight or too loose.

But with so many Bible sizes, editions, and formats out there, choosing the right cover can feel a little daunting. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from measuring your Bible to choosing the perfect Harris Tweed pattern.

Measure Your Bible

The most important step is getting accurate measurements. Ensure that you are using your own measurements and not relying on a size label or a webpage as most of these give only the trim/page/block size of the Book or Bible and not the overall size

You'll need three dimensions:

  • Height — measure the full height of the Book or Bible from top to bottom
  • Width — measure the width of the book or Bible when closed, from spine to fore-edge
  • Depth (spine width) — measure the thickness of the book or Bible at its thickest point, including any tabs

A few tips for accurate measuring:

  • Use a ruler or tape measure, not a rough estimate
  • Measure with the book or Bible closed
  • If your book or Bible has a zip or clasp, measure with it fastened
  • If your book or Bible has page tabs that extend beyond the pages, include these in your width measurement
  • Measure in centimetres for the most accurate results

Tell us about the yapp

Yapp refers to the soft leather overhang on a Bible or book cover that extends beyond the edges of the pages, curving inward to protect the text block from dust, wear, and damage while providing a comfortable grip and a handcrafted appearance

Tell us if your Bible has:

  • semi yapp
  • full yapp
  • no yapp
  • zipped

Once you have your measurements, include them when you place your order and we'll make your cover to fit perfectly.

Book sleeve size: Royal vs B Format...What's the Difference? and can I fit my bible in one

You may have seen references to 'Royal' and 'B format' when looking at our book covers. These are standard book size designations used in UK publishing:

B format is for books measuring approximately 198mm x 129mm — a common size for paperback books and many personal size Bibles.

Royal format is for books approximately 234mm x 156mm — a larger format often used for hardback books and some standard size Bibles.

Our standard size book sleeves may fit your Bible, however they are not made to measure products and only come in the sizes stated above.

Choosing Your Harris Tweed Pattern

This is the fun part. Harris Tweed comes in a wonderful range of colours and patterns, each one unique to the weaver and the batch. Choosing the right pattern is a personal decision, but here are a few things to consider:

Think about how you'll use it. If your Bible/book travels with you to church, a study group, or work, you might want a pattern that's versatile and understated. If it sits on your bedside table or is primarily a home companion, you might enjoy something bolder and more expressive.

Consider the recipient. If you're buying as a gift, think about the person's personality and style. Harris Tweed's natural palette — heathers, greens, blues, warm browns — tends to suit a wide range of tastes, but some patterns are more classic and some more contemporary.

Trust the fabric. Harris Tweed has a quality that photographs can't fully capture. The texture, the depth of colour, the way it catches the light — these are things you experience in person. Our patterns are all beautiful; the choice is really about which one speaks to you.

If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll be happy to help you choose.

Buying as a Gift

A Harris Tweed book or Bible cover makes a truly special gift — for a confirmation, a baptism, a birthday, a Christmas present, or simply as a thoughtful gesture for someone whose faith is important to them.

If you're buying as a gift and don't have access to the recipient's Bible to measure it, there are a few options:

  • Ask a family member or friend who might know the Bible's size
  • Email the seller or manufacturer to ask for the specifics.
  • Get in touch with us — we're experienced at helping gift-buyers navigate this challenge
